E-Commerce Front-End developer/designer

Location: Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa


The Developer would be responsible for the design, configuration and implementation of E-commerce online applications. This position will work with members of the E-commerce, Marketing and IT teams to understand the E-commerce business, creative and technical requirements. The Front End Developer analyzes, configures and tunes the front end online applications and is considered to have advanced knowledge on web and mobile technologies




1. Bachelors degree in computer science or related field desired, but not required.
2. Project Management experience

1. Five years of software development and coding experience.
2. Five years of experience with any of the following content management systems: ExpressionEngine, Drupal, Magento, WordPress
3. Strong understanding of Object Oriented Programming and the Linux, Apache, Mysql, PHP stack.
4. Firm understanding of internet and web service concepts.
5. A strong understanding of UI, cross-browser compatibility, general web functions and standards.
6. Deep functional knowledge or hands on design experience with Web Services.
7. Experience in building scalable, high performing and robust eCommerce applications
8. Responsive Design experience – ideally both browser and mobile.



Strategic Direction

• Research & recommend new technologies to enhance user experience
• Architect & implement code that will meet current & future needs.
• Provide clear, detailed descriptions of all online channel specifications such as product features, activities, software, communication protocols, programming languages, and operating systems software and hardware.
• Develop new applications & provide enhancements to existing products
• Utilize existing company code libraries & frameworks where applicable


• Maintains user accounts and security privileges for CMS.
• Update content via a Content Management System (CMS), writing HTML, editing copy, etc.
• Provides end-user training and support of the CMS as and when required.
• Development and enhancement of the CMS to align to business needs


• Document technical factors such as server load, bandwidth, database performance, and browser and device types.
• Manage and prioritize the site enhancements to ensure that any service provider delivers what is expected.
• Communicate the issues and provide insight to the Head of E-Commerce.
• Manages change management affecting the E-Commerce platforms.
• Coordinates all planned down-time / maintenance requests for business service outages and prioritizes production workloads during crisis situations.

Day to Day Support

• Direct web site content creation, enhancement and maintenance.
• Communicates to key stakeholders when service disruptions occur, and report on service trends.
• Take ownership of escalated client issues and ensure successful resolution of all client issues.
• Resolve all customer enquiries for the company directed to the PR & Comms or Customer Relations.
• Troubleshoot e-commerce online channels issues and initiate the path to resolution with the internal and external IT teams.
• Conduct a bi-annual customer satisfaction survey.
• Maintain all National Lottery online channels including, but not limited to, e-commerce, USSD and mobile application services.

Project Management

• Act as a Subject Matter Expert in the discovery and investigation of new e-commerce projects and initiatives.
• Establish an ongoing and weekly plan of website and mobile channels improvements that need to be addressed with clear recommendations as to requirements.
• Ensure site design integrity and quality control consistency throughout a projects lifecycle.
• Work on multiple project timelines simultaneously in a demanding deadline driven environment.
• Communicate with the project team throughout all stages of development ensuring projects meet deadlines and are within necessary requirements.

Digital Platforms Design/Development

• Independently design, code & test major features, as well as work jointly with other team members to deliver complex changes
• Develop or validate test routines and schedules to ensure that test cases mimic external interfaces and address all browser and device types.
• Document test plans, testing procedures, or test results.
• Design new online channels and services to make better use of social networks and emerging technologies to include mobile apps as and when required.


Technical Knowledge and skills

• Experience with Drupal 6/7, Express Engine, Magento or Wordpress (CMS).
• Experience with PHP/Javascript/HTML/XHTML/CSS/Apache/MySQL/WSDL, XSD, XML, XSLT/CSS3
• Experience with integrating outside APIs (Al-Pro/Facebook/Twitter/Google Maps/Payment Processors).
• Experience with eCommerce and Google’s packages e.g. Analytics, PPC, Webmaster tools and Base.
• An understanding of SEO marketing and related tools.
• A track record of writing code that is clean, understandable and cross browser compatible
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Experience developing Responsive/Adaptive Design solutions (RWD)
•  Understanding of building complex interactive UI uses the latest approaches
• Experience refactoring existing code to improve readability, code reuse, performance, and maintainability
